These guidelines are intended mainly for the use of justices and explain procedures specific to the juvenile courts in England.
Abstract
The manual is also intended as a reference for social workers, advocates, and students. It explains the purpose and nature of the juvenile court and consultations which should be held before bringing a case to court. It describes the selection and training of magistrates for the juvenile court panel and delineates the selection and the role of the chairman and deputy chairmen during the hearing and the announcement of the decision. A discussion of the courtroom covers the arrangement of the room, the atmosphere, and the people authorized to attend proceedings. The parents' role in the juvenile court, legal representation for the juvenile, and criminal proceedings in the juvenile court are discussed. Orders available in criminal and care cases, the choice of orders, and procedures for appeals are also explained.
