This manual is a step-by-step guide to implementing a Teens for AIDS (TAP) program in a school or community-based organization.
Abstract
The introduction presents an overview of the need for HIV and AIDS education and the effectiveness of peer education as a means of obtaining this objective. A section on "Building Support" features the importance of laying the groundwork in a school or a community by presenting the TAP program to the board of directors, the PTA, agency staff, or other influential groups. To help the TAP supporter become an advocate for the program, this section outlines 10 reasons to implement TAP and presents arguments to counter program opposition. The section on "Getting Started" focuses on program planning, budgets, and funding. It includes a job description and tips for the program coordinator and explains how to recruit youth participants. The training section outlines, session by session, 20 hours of HIV prevention and AIDS education information and skill-building exercises for the TAP group. The "Activities" section describes some education efforts that TAP members can design and implement and suggests approaches for supporting their efforts. Other sections provide guidelines on how to interact with the media and a listing of educational materials that can be used as resources.
