This paper presents procedures and activities to support the implementation of self-contained delinquency prevention programs in schools.
Abstract
The paper is intended to illustrate the application of principles described in a longer monograph entitled Delinquency Prevention: Theories and Strategies. It is also intended to help State and local program designers and State agency representatives develop new programs, assess current opportunities, improve existing programs, and develop action steps. Self-contained programs are limited, short-term efforts directed toward a distinct segment of the youth population. They aim to provide immediate benefits to the youth participants by creating a social situation likely to limit their participation in delinquent behavior. An overview of self-contained delinquency prevention programs discusses their intended benefits, identifies their differences with larger-scale efforts, and explains why their focus is on schools. A discussion of program features focuses on content, activities, participants, program routines, setting, and evaluation. Tasks and activities to implement the principles and strategies are next presented in a sequence of steps. Recommendations for planning a program, obtaining support, and developing an action plan are also included. For each subject area, problems, issues, tasks, and possible approaches are suggested. Figures are included. For a related document, see NCJ 70995.
