Parental involvement in juvenile delinquency intervention is explored.
Abstract
According to the author of this article, the rise of the justice model in working with young offenders has included a withdrawal from traditional groupwork methods which has produced some unhelpful consequences. The 1991 Criminal Justice Act (England) and subsequent government announcements have targeted the parents of young people in trouble for official disapproval and punishment. This paper argues for a new, voluntary groupwork program for parents in this position, sharing common concerns and drawing on common strengths. As a result, the author suggests the benefits would accrue both to those taking part and to those concerned to manage youth justice systems on minimum intervention principles. Workers are urged to recapture some groupwork skills and abilities to put such a program into practice. Characteristics of a groupwork program for parents of troubled youths are included. References
