BRAZIL'S MODERN POLITICAL HISTORY, SOCIAL REALITIES, AND FORCES THAT HAVE CAUSED THE AUTHOR AND OTHERS TO WORK TO LIBERATE THE COUNTRY FROM MILITARY RULE ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS BOOK WRITTEN IN EXILE FOR NON-BRAZILLIAN READERS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR'S OWN GRADUAL PROCESS OF POLITICAL AWAKENING IS RECOUNTED AS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OTHER MEMBERS OF PRIVILEGED CLASSES BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE BRAZIL. EXPERIENCES DESCRIBED INCLUDE OBSERVATIONS OF RELIGIOUS, ECONOMIC, AND SOCIAL ASPECTS OF BRAZILIAN SOCIETY, WORK AS A LIBERAL JOURNALIST LIVING IN RIO DE JANEIRO AT THE TIME OF THE GOVERNMENT'S 1964 MILITARY TAKEOVER, WRITING ARTICLES EXPOSING AND DENOUNCING THE MILITARY RULERS' GROWING SUPPRESSION OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LIBERTIES AND USE OF TERRORISM AND TORTURE AGAINST POLITICAL OPPONENTS, AND WORKING AGAINST THE REGIME AS A MEMBER OF CONGRESS FROM 1966 UNTIL BEING FORCED INTO HIDING AND, LATER, EXILE. THE MILITARY REGIME IS ANALYZED AND FOUND TO BENEFIT NORTH AMERICAN CAPITALISTS MORE THAN THE BRAZILIAN PEOPLE. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE THE CONTRAST BETWEEN RURAL AND URBAN BRAZILIAN SOCIETY, THE DEVELOPMENT AND NATURE OF BRAZILIAN REVOLUTIONARY ORGANIZATIONS, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHRISTIANITY AND REVOLUTION, BRAZIL'S ECONOMIC DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN INVESTMENTS, AND THE EXPERIENCE OF LIVING IN HIDING. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT REVOLUTION TO FREE THE PEOPLE FROM THEIR CURRENT EXPLOITATION WILL BE POSSIBLE ONLY IF THE PEOPLE ARE HIGHLY ORGANIZED AND MAINTAIN A CLEAR SENSE OF THEIR OBJECTIVES. AN INDEX IS PROVIDED. (CFW)
