This report describes the 20 local juvenile justice programs that received the Gould-Wysinger Awards from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in 1993.
Abstract
The programs include Alabama and New Hampshire programs of juvenile work restitution; a Colorado project focusing on jail removal and status offender deinstitutionalization; and an alternative learning academy for disruptive, unsuccessful, disinterested, and otherwise problematic students at a Florida middle school. Additional programs include a Maryland program that screens first-time juvenile offenders and assists those diagnosed as learning disabled, a juvenile assessment and intake service in Kansas, and a program designed to reduce the delinquency rate among middle-school black males from high-risk situations in Iowa. Further programs include a teen talk show, an interagency juvenile justice program, a shelter and support program for young females removed from their homes due to sexual abuse or other problems, a sex offender assessment program, and an anger management program for youth and parents.
