This article examines the role and the influence of older Chicano gang members.
Abstract
The article was based partially on extensive interviews with High Risk Offenders who were jailed for murder or attempted murder, usually in drive-by shootings, in East Los Angeles. The "veteranos" (literally veterans) or older street toughs in a gang may have undue influence on youngsters who are seeking identity, particularly those lacking a father in their home. The younger gangbangers may look up to the older men, follow their advice, and seek to emulate them. Thus, the veteranos have the potential to be either a positive or negative influence. They can help reduce the violence in the communities where gangs are active and help young gangbangers find alternate lifestyles and avoid criminal behavior. However, some veteranos remain active members of the gang, participating in the activities of the teenage members. Some of the veteranos who take pride in their gangbanging see their role as the leader of the younger members in defending their gang's reputation, even at the cost of their lives. Thus right and wrong are determined by the values of the gang. References
