This book is intended to assist elementary school-aged children who must testify in court in civil proceedings and to help children realize going to court can be a positive experience.
Abstract
Children are often in awe of the power represented by the court, and this can make them apprehensive. Adding to that apprehension is the fact that the outcome of the proceeding in which a child's testimony is needed is very important to the child. Knowing what to expect and being prepared for the experience can ease unnecessary trauma, regardless of the nature of the proceedings. The book contains an introduction for parents and suggests parents work with their children one chapter at a time to prepare them for court. Book chapters elaborate on what court is and why children may have to be in court, court personnel, events that will occur in court, questions that will be asked in court, and what will happen once children are done with court. 5 illustrations
