THROUGH INDIVIDUALIZED ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION, PHYSICAL ACHIEVEMENT, AND ATTITUDE DEVELOPMENT, THE PROGRAM SUCCESSFULLY RE-ENROLLED CLIENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOL AND REDUCED ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
ACCEPTED REFERRALS, DEVELOPED COOPERATIVELY BETWEEN THE FLINT BOARD OF EDUCATION, GENESSEE COUNTY PROBATE COURT, AND THE PROJECT STAFF, NUMBERED 213 THROUGH SIX SESSIONS. A TOTAL OF 21 STUDENTS WERE RE-ENROLLED AND SERVED DURING THE SEVENTH SESSION. EACH STUDENT UNDERWENT BIOGRAPHIC, PHYSICAL, AND MENTAL OBSERVATION UPON ENTRY INTO AND ALSO DURING THE PROJECT. ALL STUDENTS TOOK PART IN A REMEDIAL ACADEMIC PROGRAM, WITH EMPHASIS ON READING AND MATH. ALL PARTICIPATED IN A INNOVATIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM, AND RECEIVED INTENSIVE CASEWORK RELATED TO THEIR NEEDS. POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARD PUBLIC SCHOOL, SOCIETY, AND SELF WERE DEVELOPED IN ANOTHER PHASE OF THE PROGRAM. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE PROJECT MET ITS GOALS FOR THE YEAR. GRADUATES WERE REENROLLED IN PUBLIC SCHOOL, AND TOOK PART IN A INTENSIVE FOLLOW-UP CASEWORK PROGRAM. PRE AND POST PROJECT DATA COLLECTED SHOWED A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN OFFICIAL ARRESTS, SCHOOL SUSPENSION, AND INSTITUTIONALIZATION.
