DESIGN AND APPLICATION CONSIDERATIONS ARE BROKEN DOWN AS THEY RELATE TO GEOGRAPHIC BASE FILES (GBF) IN THE SAVANNAH AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT SYSTEM (SALES) IN GEORGIA.
Abstract
THE SYSTEM DESCRIBED CONSISTS OF MODULES CONCERNING INCIDENT REPORTING AND CRIMINAL HISTORY, MANPOWER ACCOUNTING, UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING, CRIME ANALYSIS, DETECTIVE WORKLOAD AND DISPOSITION REPORTING, AND GEOCODING. LIMITATIONS AND PECULIARITIES OF SAVANNAH GEOGRAPHIC BOUNDARIES AND POLICE FORCE ARE CONSIDERED WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE DEMANDS THEY MAKE ON THE COMPUTER SYSTEM THAT WAS DEVELOPED. THIS INFORMATION IS THEN EXPANDED TO INTORDUCE CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUCH A SYSTEM FOR ANY POLICE DEPARTMENT. HARDWARE FOR THE SAVANNAH SYSTEM IS LISTED. GENERAL ASSUMPTIONS REGARDING THE OBJECTIVES AND CONCEPTUAL PHASES OF THE MODEL ARE IDENTIFIED. A ROUGH OUTLINE OF A GEOGRAPHIC BASE FILE DESIGN AND APPLICATION PROJECT ARE PRESENTED WHICH COULD SERVE AT BOTH THE MICRO AND THE MACRO LEVELS OF PLANNING AND SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS A BASIC STARTING POINT FOR THE DESIGN OF ANY TYPE OF FILE. MORE DETAILED INFORMATION IS PROVIDED IN THE APPENDIX, WHERE ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE GEOCODE SUBSYSTEM OVERVIEW AND TO DATA STORAGE FIELDS. (MHP)
