Conflict has persisted for generations between the French Police Nationale and the Gendarmerie.
Abstract
The Police Nationale are responsible for main towns and cities, while the Gendarmerie look after villages and towns with less than 10,000 inhabitants. The Police Nationale have never enjoyed the same public esteem as the Gendarmerie. Nonetheless, in 1989, discontent emerged from within the ranks of the Gendarmerie, and committees were formed to investigate grievances. The Police Nationale have taken note of the discontent, especially since the Gendarmerie has historically received more funding from the government. Cooperation between the two police forces is discussed.
