Abstract
IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THE PSYCHOLOGICAL LITERATURE HAS DEALT ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY WITH ONLY ONE TYPE OF GAMBLERTHE COMPULSIVE. THIS EMPHASIS HAS GIVEN PSYCHOLOGISTS, AS WELL AS LAYMEN, A DISTORTED PICTURE OF THE TRUE STATE OF AFFAIRS. AT LEAST FOUR OTHER KINDS OF GAMBLERS HAVE BEEN HISTORICALLY IDENTIFIED - THE SOCIAL GAMBLER, THE PROFESSIONAL, THE SUCCESSFUL ADDICT, AND THE CHEAT. AUTHOR ABSTRACT
