This study examines the current status and future potential of Neighborhood Watch programs in California through a literature review, a workshop, and a survey of 99 police agencies servicing communities with populations of 50,000 or more.
Abstract
A review of the literature focused on the role of police, police/community relations, crime prevention/Neighborhood Watch, fear of crime, program maintenance, and communication. At a workshop in San Diego, 200 ideas on ways to improve Neighborhood Watch programs were formulated into issues, including formation and maintenance, events and awards, communication, training, and policy. Of the 99 agencies surveyed, 82 responded to questionnaires which focused on organization and management, training, communication, crime reporting and dispatch procedures, and roles and expectations. 69 footnotes, survey documents, tables, charts and 37 references.
