Diversity has become a central issue for most community leaders and law enforcement officers because of its significant impact on American society.
Abstract
Being associated with people, groups, or organizations that promote cross-cultural awareness has become a popular trend. Even so, few empirical studies have addressed issues of concern to many ethnic groups. Ethnicity refers to a group classification in which members share a unique social and cultural heritage passed on from one generation to the next. Culture may exist within both ethnic groups and racial groups. Community policing represents one law enforcement response to diversity; direct interaction and communication with the service population enhances knowledge of cultural differences. The melting pot theory and the assimilation concept of diversity are discussed in terms of social relationships and values. In addition, the need for law enforcement professionals and organizations to learn about ethnic and nonethnic groups they serve is stressed. 23 references
