PAPERS FROM A CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SOCIOLOGY HELD IN LYON, FRANCE, IN JULY 1977, DISCUSSED THE SOCIOLOGY OF SOCIAL DEVIANCE AND SOCIAL CONTROL.
Abstract
THE PARTICIPANTS INCLUDED COLLEGE PROFESSORS, RESEARCHERS, AND CLINICIANS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. THE OBJECT OF THE CONFERENCE WAS TO PROMOTE THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS BETWEEN SOCIOLOGISTS OF SOCIAL DEVIANCE AND CLINICIANS WHO TREAT DEVIANTS TO OFFER AN OCCASION FOR THE CONFRONTATION OF THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL PERSPECTIVES AND FOR MULTIDISCIPLINARY CONSIDERATION OF SOCIAL DEVIANCE (SOCIOLOGICAL, LEGAL, PHILOSOPHICAL, CLINICAL, MEDICAL, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL). DEFINITIONS OF DEVIANCE VARIED WIDELY WITH THE PARTICULAR ORIENTATION OF THE SPEAKER, BUT IN MOST CASES DEVIANCE WAS SEEN AS RIGIDLY DEPENDENT ON SOCIETY, ITS ORGANIZATION, ITS MEANS, AND ITS GOALS. FOR MANY, DEVIANCE, WHETHER COLLECTIVE OR INDIVIDUAL, WAS CONSIDERED EITHER AS THE EXPRESSION OF A RELATIONAL CONFLICT OR AS THE PRODUCT OF THE TRANSGRESSION OF SOCIAL NORMS. CLINICIANS FREQUENTLY FELT THAT DEVIANCE MUST BE UNDERSTOOD FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE DEVIANT PERSON HIMSELF AND NOT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE DEVIANT ACT. SPECIFIC TOPICS RELATED TO THE OMNIPRESENCE OF SOCIAL CONTROL; PHILOSOPHICAL ORIGINS OF THE SOCIOLOGY OF DEVIANCE; THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRIMINAL PENALTIES; THE SOCIAL FUNCTION OF DEVIANCE; A COMPARISON OF JUVENILE COURTS IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES; RESOCIALIZATION OF RELEASED PRISONERS; MEANS OF CONTROLLING CRIME IN THE FAMILY AND SOCIETY; WOMEN AND CRIME; DRUG ADDICTION AND CRIME; CRIMINAL ABORTION; CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR AND THE PERCEPTION OF CRIME; CRIME, REGRESSION, AND COUNTERTRANSFERENCE; AND VARIOUS APPROACHES TO THE STUDY OF DEVIANCE. SOME OF THE COLLECTED PAPERS INCLUDED BIBLIOGRAPHIES, REFERENCES, AND CHARTS. --IN FRENCH. (INL)
