Abstract
This article discusses prior research conducted on the Filipino American ethnic group in order to present trends experienced by this group in relation to alcohol and tobacco use and abuse. After presenting a brief background on the cultural and health histories of Filipino Americans, the author details Filipino Americans’ use and abuse of alcohol and tobacco. Noting that the core cultural values of Filipino American’s puts them at a higher than normal risk in regards to alcohol and tobacco problems, this article argues that various sociocultural factors must be taken into consideration for alcohol and tobacco treatment programs to be successful for this ethnic group.
