Abstract
Chapter 1 briefly reviews the origins of policing in Canada, particularly the British experience, which gave shape to many of Canada's institutions and traditions. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the context in which the policing enterprise occurs, followed by a chapter that explores some of the special categories of police services, including private security, with attention to the various provincial, territorial, regional, and municipal police organizations. Chapter 4 highlights the current qualities and capabilities that are most in demand for the person who would become a police officer. Chapter 5 provides an analysis of leadership, which has the potential to manifest itself at all levels of an innovative police organization. A discussion of the basics of police administration in Chapter 6 portrays Canadian police organizations as systems. The next chapter looks at assignment to duty and reviews the various areas in which police personnel may use their skills and talents for the benefit of their organization. Chapter 8 considers police organizations as integrated units, examines the ways in which they meet their mandates, and discusses how Canadian police services make the best use of their human, financial, and technological resources. Remaining chapters address communication and information technology, leading innovation in Canadian policing, and looking forward to the next millennium of Canadian police service. 46 references, a 378-item selected bibliography, a subject index, and appended Canadian police case studies and a selected listing of associations, organizations, and web sites for Canadian policing
