Data are presented on New York State's female parolees as of August 31, 1980.
Abstract
Data are provided on the percentage of female parolees, crimes by conviction offense, maximum terms, method of release, age and ethnic composition, levels of supervision, drug and alcohol dependence, employment, and discharges and returns of New York City female parolees. As of August 31, 1980, 4 percent of the Division of Parole's caseload was female, with 71 percent of female parolees being from New York City. Drug possession and drug sale felonies accounted for 38 percent of the conviction offenses for New York City parolees and for 36 percent of the offenses outside New York City. One percent of the women under parole supervision in the New York City area were serving maximum terms of less than 1 year, and 82 percent of the New York City parolees were released by the parole board; 10 percent were conditional releasees. Half of the parolees were 26 to 35 years old; 64 percent were black, 18 percent white, and 17 percent Hispanic. In a sample of female parolees in each area, about 75 percent were on intensive (report weekly or bi-weekly to parole officer) and active (report monthly) supervision. Thirty-five percent of the parolees in the New York City area have been reported as drug or alcohol dependent. Only 43.8 percent of the female parolees were employed or involved in school programs. A total of 190 New York City parolees were discharged from parole supervision during a 1-year period (September, 1979 to August, 1980). Only a small portion of female parolees are returned yearly to State prison. Tabular data are provided.
