TRAUMA CAUSED BY PHYSICAL AGENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS ARE EXAMINED IN THIS THREE-VOLUME REFERENCE TEXT DIRECTED AT PROFESSIONALS IN THE FIELDS OF MEDICINE, LAW, FORENSIC SCIENCE, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT.
Abstract
DIRECT TRAUMA AND INDUSTRIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS ARE CONSIDERED IN THESE VOLUMES TO FACILITATE THE ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF PROBLEMS RELATING TO THE CAUSATIN AND MECHANISM OF INJURIES AND THEIR COMPLICATIONS, THE EXAMINATION OF EVIDENCE IN TRAUMA AND ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS, AND THE CLARIFICATION OF MEDICAL ISSUES INVOLVED IN THESE OCCURENCES. VOLUME ONE EXAMINES TRAUMA BY PHYSICAL AGENTS UNDER THESE BREAKDOWNS: (1) MECHANICAL INJURY; (2) INJURY BY FIREARMS, BOMBS, AND EXPLOSIVES; (3) BAROTRAUMA; (4) INJURY BY ELECTRICAL FORCE; (5) INJURY BY IONIZING RADIATION; (6) THERMAL INJURY; AND (7) ULTRASOUND INJURY. VOLUME TWO CONSIDERS INJURY BY CHEMICAL AGENTS, INCLUDING CHAPTERS ON FOOD-BORNE TOXICANTS, ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND CARBON MONOXIDE. CRASH INJURIES ARE CONSIDERED IN THIS VOLUME; ROAD INJURIES, AIR DISASTERS, HOME AND HOSPITAL ACCIDENTS ARE DISCUSSED. SEX CRIMES ARE EXAMINED UNDER THE CATEGORIES RAPE AND ABNORMAL SEXUAL BEHAVIOR. DEATH AND EXAMINATION OF HUMAN REMAINS ARE THE TOPICS OF THE CONCLUDING CHAPTERS OF THE VOLUMES ON PHYSICAL TRAUMA. KINDS OF DEATH, POSTMORTEM PROPERTIES OF THE BODY, POSTMORTEM INJURIES, ORGAN TRANSPLANT, FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY, ODONTOLOGY, AND ROENTOLOGY ARE THE TOPICS ANALYZED. VOLUME THREE DEALS WITH ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS, BROKEN DOWN BY TYPES OF OCCUPATION. MEDICAL HAZARDS ARE DESCRIBED IN THE SECOND PART, INCLUDING COMPLICATIONS RESULTING FROM THERAPEUTIC MEASURES, SURGERY, AND ANATHESIA. PART THREE CONSIDERS THE ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS RELATING TO OCCUPATIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DISEASE, HIGH ALTITUDE, DROWNING, INFECTION, ANIMAL AND INSECT BITES AND INJURY, INJURY BY PLANTS AND FUNGI, CHEMICAL AGENTS, FOOD POISONING AND ASPHYXIATION BY FOOD, AND THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS CAUSING CONGENITAL MALFORMATION, ACCIDENTS, CRIME, SUICIDE AND DISEASE. PART FOUR DEALS WITH LEGAL THEORIES PERTINENT TO TRAUMA AND HAZARDS: NEGLIGENCE, MALPRACTICE, PRODUCTS LIABILITY, CAUSATION, DAMAGES, INFORMED CONSENT, AND THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PATHOLOGIST IN WORKMAN'S COMPENSATION CLAIMS. THE TEXT IS ILLUSTRATED WITH PHOTOGRAPHS OF INJURIES RESULTING FROM TRAUMA AND PHYSICAL HAZARDS. TABLES ARE PROVIDED AND REFERENCES CAN BE FOUND AT THE ENDS OF CHAPTERS. AN INDEX TO THE ENTIRE THREE-VOLUME SET IS INCLUDED AT THE END OF EACH VOLUME, AND THE TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS ARE INDEXED ALONG WITH TEXTUAL MATERIAL. A TABLE OF CONTENTS TO THE ENTIRE SET IS PROVIDED IN THE FIRST VOLUME. THE REMAINING VOLUMES HAVE INDIVIDUAL CONTENTS TABLES. (DAG)
