This document lists grants awarded by the U.S. Justice Department's National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in FY 2013 under the Forensic DNA Backlog Reduction Program, and each grantee provides an abstract of the activities and effects of the grant's implementation.
Abstract
A listing presents each grantee's title by State, along with the amount of the grant. Clicking on the grantee's name links the reader to the grantee's abstract of its activities, goals, and achievements under the grant for FY 2013. Each abstract is preceded by the recipient's name, NIJ award number, and award amount. The intent of these grants is to provide recipients with additional funds that will enable them to reduce lab backlogs in forensic DNA analysis. Many of the grantees report shortfalls in their regular budgets that have prevented them from providing timely DNA testing. In some States, their DNA backlog has increased under laws that mandate DNA profiles for every felon arrestee. Among the activities funded under the grants are overtime pay for analysts, lab technicians, and screeners, as well as outsourcing to other labs; hiring temporary employees for backlog work; equipment purchases intended to increase lab capacities for DNA profiling; and continuing education for DNA analysts that will increase their effectiveness and efficiency.
