A criminal justice professor from an American university attended a pilot program in foreign language (German) training for senior police officers given in West Germany.
Abstract
The program was developed and implemented by the West German Police Command Training Academy under sponsorship of the European Conference of Directors of Police Staff Colleges. The American participant comments on the experience, highlighting beneficial aspects of foreign language facility for ranking police officers and noting that this need is far from recognized in the United States. The course was a total immersion program of 6-week duration, attended by officers from France, England, Denmark, and Norway. In addition to using and understanding spoken German, the curriculum emphasized criminal justice-related vocabulary, and lecturers addressed issues of concern in police work. The next course is scheduled for England, to be attended by non-English speaking police officers from abroad. One table and four reterences are given.
