Educators and others participating in a symposium on youth violence present papers on ways to prevent serious juvenile crime and delinquency, focusing on ways schools can involve youth in delinquency prevention.
Abstract
A crime prevention/education specialist suggests that proactive rather than reactive strategies to school security are needed and that interagency cooperation is essential. One school district has set up or is in the process of considering satellite vocational education programs, a sports program to stimulate students' academic growth, and a special program for talented dropouts. Peer Culture Development programs attempt to mobilize the power of peer influence as a strong deterrent to delinquent behavior. Other options in the fight against juvenile delinquency are restitution programs, law-related education in the classroom, school-court communication, day treatment (including counseling, therapy, education, and survival skills) for delinquent youth, and parent-child mediation. Youth gangs and racial conflict are other problems which are considered. A list of merit awards for youth involvement programs is included, along with a list of presenters.
