These statistics on traffic crashes in Florida in 1997 and comparisons with previous years are based on long-form reports from police agencies regarding traffic crashes in the State.
Abstract
Police investigated and reported 240,639 traffic crashes involving 385,964 drivers during 1997. The number of crashes declined 0.3 percent from 1996. The 2,542 fatal crashes resulted in 2,811 fatalities, an 0.2 percent increase in fatalities from the previous year. A total of 32.9 percent of the traffic fatalities and 10 percent of the crashes were alcohol-related. Sixty percent of the crashes occurred in primarily business areas, while 58.3 percent of fatal crashes occurred in open country or residential areas. A total of 83.6 percent of motor vehicle occupants, bicyclists, and motorcyclists involved in crashes were reported as using safety equipment. Nineteen percent of the traffic fatalities were pedestrians, 4.1 percent were bicycle drivers, and 5.8 percent were motorcycle drivers. Tables and figures
