Abstract
Individual papers focus on legal and nonlegal issues related to legislation and enforcement of gun control laws, assumptions underlying gun control, the attitudes of academicians and the public toward gun control, and the relationship between gun ownership levels and rates of violence in the United States from 1947 through 1978. Additional papers examine the analogy between a handgun ban and the prohibition of alcohol, the prohibition of the Saturday Night Special, the impacts of Federal and State gun control laws, the ownership of firearms for reasons of self- defense, and the role of gun ownership and other forms of private-sector crime prevention in response to the fear of crime.
