Abstract
Six tables provide data on import and export of firearms, 1970-1994; firearm business permits, 1979-94; restricted weapons, 1978-94; firearms missing, lost, stolen, and recovered, 1978-94; firearms acquisition certificates, 1979-94; and firearm prohibitions, 1978-1994. Another four tables focus on firearm permits, 1979-94; firearm homicide, 1974-94; types of firearms used in firearm homicides, 1974-94; and firearm robberies, 1974- 94. The remaining tables report on offensive weapon offenses, 1974-94; firearm deaths, 1970-93; homicidal deaths and suicides that involved firearms, 1970-93; and hospitalization due to firearm injuries, 1981/82 to 1991/92. The appended 1991 Firearms Survey shows that there were 3.1 million rifles and 2.3 million shotguns. Based on data from the Firearms Registration and Administration Section of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, there were 1 million handguns. A total of 2.2 million private households owned one or more firearms, accounting for almost one- quarter of all private households in Canada. Two-thirds of firearm-owning households cited hunting as the main reason for owning firearms.
