This issue of the Home Office Statistical Bulletin provides a statistical account of the firearm and shotgun certificates applied for and issued in England and Wales in 1992.
Abstract
Tables show data broken down by type of application, whether it was granted or refused, and police force area. At the end of 1992, there were 136,800 firearm certificates on issue--1,800 less than at the end of 1991. This continues a steady decline since 1968, when the total was 216,300. There were 689,200 shotgun certificates on issue--192,800 below the peak of 882,000 in 1988. For both types of certificates, about 1.5 percent of new applications were refused in 1992. At the end of 1992, there were about 2,380 registered firearms dealers in England and Wales--180 less than the year before. Firearms permits granted to visitors covered 1,430 people and 2,990 weapons; shotgun permits granted to visitors covered 5,060 people and 9,300 weapons. 7 tables, 2 figures, and 15 endnotes
