Abstract
Steps to take in performing background and preemployment investigations are outlined, and a sample employment application, designed to help an investigator during his investigation of the applicant, is included. Ways to initiate a missing person's investigation are described and include collecting as much information and data on the missing person as possible. A sample form for a missing person's report is provided. Additionally, surveillance is defined and divided into two categories: (1) the investigator must move to follow a subject ('tailing') and (2) the investigator remains in a fixed position to observe the subject (a stake-out). Preparations that the investigator should make before beginning either type of surveillance are noted, and the investigator's function in a civil litigation case is described. Further, the investigator's conduct in automobile accident investigations, public accident investigations, and product liability investigations is defined. Sample forms for case notes and civil litigation information are provided. The importance of mastering interview and statement-taking techniques is emphasized. Factors that should be considered when screening applicants for undercover investigation are listed, and methods of investigative photography are explored. Finally, ways to start an investigative agency are addressed, and advice on equipment and clients is provided. Five appendixes provide sources of information, a code of ethics, and lists of investigator associations and correspondence schools.
