This article surveys New Hampshire's legal, treatment, and preventive strategies to combat drunk driving, drug trafficking, and other problems related to substance abuse.
Abstract
New Hampshire's size and location provide a microcosm for analyzing problems associated with substance abuse and potential solutions. After describing the State's geographic and demographic features, the article addresses judicial procedures for handling minor and serious drug cases and the formation of the New Hampshire Drug Task Force and its mission to interrupt the flow of drugs through and within the State. Also described are local level initiatives which try to curb Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) offenses through stricter laws, mandatory treatment for second offenders, improvements to the treatment resources, and education programs. Programs initiated by the State Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention are detailed, as are its clinical/treatment network and the Intervention Detention Center for second DWI offenders.
