A senior citizen narrates this film on practical crime prevention techniques for older citizens and discusses the network of available organized prevention programs.
Abstract
A variety of ways to secure a residence and ensure personal safety are depicted. Police conduct a home security check, demonstrate 'Operation Identification' (a program that encourages citizens to engrave identification numbers on possessions to help deter burglars and complicate the fencing of stolen goods), and attend neighborhood crime watch meetings. Retired volunteers install security devices and help organize a volunteer escort service. A senior citizen testifies in court to emphasize that obtaining justice through witness testimony is also an important part of crime prevention. In addition, a volunteer group of senior citizens teaches others about con games and how to avoid becoming a victim. Overall, the film emphasizes that by participating in crime prevention programs, the elderly can decrease their vulnerability, increase their mobility, and alleviate their fears. A leader's guide accompanies the film.
