This report describes the preparation of a childhood violence prevention program.
Abstract
A violence prevention program -- Let’s Talk About Living in a World with Violence -- was introduced into schools in Tompkins County, NY, and Chicago, IL. The program was intended to reduce children’s legitimacy of aggression and aggressive behavior through a combination of cognitive restructuring and behavioral rehearsal, as assessed through a structured series of data collections. The original program design was revised in several minor ways: (1) Tompkins County subjects were limited to those in school classrooms; (2) Adults delivering the intervention completed the Hightower Teacher-Child Rating Scale, a 38-item checklist to elicit teachers’ perceptions of a student’s problem behaviors and competencies; (3) A survey, "Things I Have Seen and Heard" was used to assess children’s exposure to various types of violent incidents; and (4) A combination of teacher-completed measures and structured observations of the professionals using the intervention was used to assess the professionals’ motivation and competence.
