A SURVEY OF INMATES, COMMUNITY COLLEGE ADMINISTRATORS, AND PRISON EDUCATORS AND ADMINISTRATORS UNDERTAKEN TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF STARTING AN ASSOCIATE IN ARTS PROGRAM AT THE DEUEL VOCATIONAL INSTITUTION (DVI).
Abstract
IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF SUCH A PROGRAM, RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: 1) CURRENT TRENDS IN PRISON EDUCATION; 2) THE NEEDS OF DVI INMATES REGARDING COLLEGE LEVEL INSTRUCTION; AND 3) THE OPINIONS OF EDUCATORS AND PRISON ADMINISTRATORS RELATIVE TO THE FEASIBILITY OF THIS PROGRAM. DATA ON INMATE GRADE LEVELS, INTELLIGENCE, OFFENSES, AND READING LEVELS WERE OBTAINED FOR A SAMPLE OF INMATES WHO WOULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR POST SECONDARY EDUCATION. THE INMATE SURVEY SHOWED THAT WHILE FEW OF THOSE ELIGIBLE FOR SUCH COURSES HAD TAKEN COLLEGE LEVEL CLASSES, INMATE INTEREST IN THE CLASSES WAS VERY HIGH. THE SURVEY OF EDUCATORS AND ADMINISTRATORS SHOWED THAT THERE WAS A GROWING INTEREST IN COLLEGE LEVEL INSTRUCTION IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT AN ASSOCIATE OF ARTS PROGRAM WOULD BE FEASIBLE AT DVI, AND THAT SUCH A PROGRAM WOULD MEET MOST OF THE STATED NEEDS OF THE DVI INMATES FOR COLLEGE LEVEL INSTRUCTION.
