This book discusses various issues pertinent to the development of a strategy for preventing violence in the workplace.
Abstract
The book explains workplace violence from various social, psychological, and historical perspectives. It reviews cases of workplace homicide, so as to identify patterns, profiles, and warning behaviors. Recognizing the importance of screening out potentially violent employees in the course of the hiring process, the author analyzes current personnel practices for hiring, screening, and interviewing job applicants. For the purpose of helping employees deal with stress likely to stimulate violent behavior, the book discusses employee counseling and employee assistance referrals. Effective discipline and termination methods are also addressed. Other chapters provide the knowledge and guidance that can assist in the development of the skills, abilities, and resources needed to solve or prevent violent situations. Other topics covered include domestic violence in the workplace, obsessive or stalking behavior at work, new personnel and human resources intervention methods, and updated security management solutions. The book also examines the growing number of workplace violence incidents from an organizational security perspective. The book has been designed for use by professors, instructors, and students of college undergraduate and graduate courses in business management, human resources management, personnel, criminal justice, security management, sociology, criminology, and human behavior in the organization. A 26-item annotated bibliography, chapter summaries and discussion questions, and appended case study and supplementary information
