These 14 papers examine research findings on domestic assault and consider prevention, treatment, and policy issues, based on a 1989 conference held in British Columbia, Canada and sponsored by the British Columbia Institute on Family Violence and two other organizations.
Abstract
An introductory paper focuses on violence against women as a global problem and suggests that family violence be viewed from individual, social, and political perspectives. Additional papers review research on the prevalence of sexual abuse of female children and adolescence, describe a community program for the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect, and present the views of adolescents regarding the prevention of spousal assault and dating violence. Further papers examine the legal and professional responses to wife assault, describe a treatment program for abusive men, provide a historical perspective on the treatment of elder abuse, explain subtle forms of elder abuse, and summarize the ethical and practical arguments regarding laws requiring the mandatory reporting of suggested cases of elder abuse. Figures, footnotes, and chapter reference lists.
