This fact sheet provides an overview of family support programs, and describes five model programs.
Abstract
Family support programs acknowledge that the family has primary responsibility for a child's development and well- being, and emphasize a proactive approach toward preventing problems. Their goal is to empower families and foster healthy development of children, to the benefit of the children, families, and society at large. Most programs include life skills training, parent information classes and support groups, parent-child groups and family activities, information and referral services, crisis intervention, family counseling, and auxiliary services such as emergency food and transportation. The five programs reviewed are Healthy Start/Healthy Families (HI), Family-Child Resources (PA), Friends of the Family (CA), State Initiative for Wisconsin (WI), and Project I CARE (OH). Also provided are the descriptions, phone numbers, and addresses of four organizations from which one may obtain further information. 5 endnotes
