This study discussed a survey of attitudes, behaviors, and social relationships of 10,160 juveniles and adults, confined in 85 facilities in 17 States, of which 4,140 self-reported as being gang members.
Abstract
This study was authored by 29 principal investigators most of whom worked at the facilities surveyed. The report contains the following: an Executive Summary of findings comparing gang members with non-gang members, develops Model 1 of the gang/STG classification system for correctional institutions, analyzes in detail the female gang member, analyzes juvenile as compared to adult gang members, analyzes the gang as a social organization, analyzes family factors in relation to gang behavior, examines the "super predator" syndrome, and provides conclusions and recommendations emanating from the report. Two major recommendations are: the U.S. Congress needs to pass new legislation to modernize the FBI's Uniform Crime Report, and the need to develop an updated classification system for dealing with gang members in the correctional environment.
