Factor Analysis - Statistical Methods and Practical Issues

NCJ Number
72014
Author(s)
J Kim; C W Mueller
Date Published
1978
Length
88 pages
Annotation
This monograph examines the different types of factor analysis used in quantitative social science research and describes the situations in which each type is most useful.
Abstract
The volume assumes that the reader has a basic understanding of factor analysis's conceptual foundations. It also assumes that the reader is aware of differences betweenm logical uncertainties and statistical uncertainties. Several standard methods of extracting initial factors are presented. Numerous methods of orthogonal and oblique rotations are considered. The monograph also explains the rules for determining the number of common factors to retain and interpret. Concepts and methods of confirmatory factor analysis are presented. Methods of constructing factor scales are outlined. In addition, practical problems that most social scientists are likely to encounter are discussed using a question and answer format. A summary of basic concepts of factor analysis, figures, tables, a glossary, and 104 references are included. For the companion volume which introduces basic concepts of factor analysis, see NCJ 72012. For other volumes in the series, see NCJ 72008, 72010-11, 72013, and 72014.
