Recent Prison Service initiatives in England have focused on implementing treatment programs for sex offenders, and the development of a special treatment unit for sex offenders at Dartmoor is described.
Abstract
A proposal was submitted in 1990 to turn Dartmoor's F- Wing into a special treatment unit for sex offenders. The unit was to offer treatment using a multidisciplinary team approach, including specialists and prison officers. The intention was to develop a structured treatment program that would last 6 to 9 months and to provide treatment in both group and individual formats. Once the unit became established, inmates were selected for participation and treatment protocols were integrated into the unit's general operation. Inmates work in a craft and design area while participating in treatment, and the unit has developed links with other correctional agencies to share information and expertise. The primary goal of treatment is to stop the victimization of women and children by helping sex offenders accept responsibility for their offending and understand the effects of sexual assault on victims.
