Videotaped excerpts from the Rally Against Drugs held at the 1986 conference of the Exploring Division of the Boy Scouts of America highlight musical numbers and speeches by drug abuse experts and celebrities that present information on the effects of drug abuse, resisting peer pressure to use drugs, and ways that groups can become involved in antidrug use activities.
Abstract
The Rally launched a national Explorer drug abuse prevention program. The videotape features three key speakers -- Dr. Thomas Gleaton; John Lawn, the Director of the Drug Enforcement Administration; and Donna Alvarado, Director of ACTION. Their speeches are interspersed with short talks by celebrities from the television, sports, and music worlds and musical presentations by Explorers. Dr. Gleaton focuses on the physiological and behavioral effects of drugs such as marijuana and cocaine. Ms. Alvarado offers suggestions for activities that teens and community groups can undertake to combat drug abuse. While highlighting the Government's role in reducing drug use, John Lawn emphasizes the role of positive peer pressure to say no to drugs. The complete speeches of Gleaton, Lawn, and Alvarado are appended to the video.
