IN THIS RESEARCH NOTE, AN ECONOMIC MODEL OF URBAN CRIME IS SPECIFIED AND ESTIMATED FOR A VIOLENT CRIME (ROBBERY) AND A PROPERTY CRIME (BURGLARY) TO TEST THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CRIMINAL ACTIVITIY AND SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS.
Abstract
THE EMPIRICAL DATA GENERATED BY THIS STUDY FOUND THAT BOTH UNEMPLOYMENT RATES AND POPULATION DENSITY INFLUENCE CRIME RATES. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CRIME AND UNEMPLOYMENT CANNOT BE DEFINITIVELY TESTED UNTIL DATA ON INDIVIDUALS BECOME AVAILABLE.
