Abstract
The Ahora (now) and Comienzos (Beginnings) program in New Mexico uses the Unisys Icon with the AutoSkills (reading) and MathSkills (math) software to teach literacy and GED courses to jail inmates. The MacLiteracy program in Los Angeles County uses software that teaches jail inmates basic math and language skills essential for success in specific training and employment areas. The McLaughlin Macintosh Project in Alaska uses Macintosh computers to teach residents of the McLaughlin Youth Correction Center language art skills, a working knowledge of computer literacy, graphic arts techniques, on-the-job training, and community service. The PAWS (Principles of Alphabet Literacy Program and the Wasatch Education System) in Texas uses a multisensory computer program to provide literacy and life skills training to offenders under 21 years old with a reading level below sixth-grade. The Precision Teaching Program in England uses basic education software and "Interchart" to promote and record progress in the acquisition of basic literacy and numeracy skills among prison inmates.
