EVALUATION OF A HALFWAY HOUSE DESIGNED TO SERVE MEN AND WOMEN RELEASED FROM JAIL AND PRISON TO PROBATION AND PAROLE IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA.
Abstract
RESULTS INDICATED THAT HOUSE RESIDENTS, PARTICULARLY THOSE WHO STAYED AT LEAST FOUR WEEKS, WERE DOING AS WELL AS OTHER PAROLEES TO THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY AREA ON RECIDIVISM, ALTHOUGH THE FOLLOW-UP WAS SMALL AT THE TIME OF THE REPORT. THE PROGRESS OF RESIDENTS WAS FELT TO BE PARTICULARLY IMPRESSIVE IN THAT THEY ARE A LOW RESOURCE GROUP, WHO HAVE VERY LITTLE OUTSIDE SUPPORT IN THE COMMUNITY. IT APPEARED THAT HOUSE STAFF SHOULD BE OF EVEN MORE ASSISTANCE IN JOB DEVELOPMENT AND PLACEMENT, BUT PERHAPS THE SINGULAR MOST IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION OF THE HOUSE TO THE PAROLEE IS IN SEEING THAT HE OR SHE DOES LIVE ALONE DURING THE FIRST MONTHS OUT OF PRISON, OR DURING A CRITICAL LIFE PERIOD WHILE ON PAROLE OR PROBATION IN THE COMMUNITY. THE DOCUMENT INCLUDES A COPY OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE USED IN SURVEYING THE RESIDENTS OF THE CENTER AND STATISTICAL INFORMATION THAT WAS GATHERED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
