Abstract
THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN LAW ENFORCEMENT IS REVIEWED, AND THE ROLE OF POLITICAL INFLUENCES IS NOTED AND CONDEMNED. PROFESSIONALISM IN POLICING IS SAID TO BE INCOMPATIBLE WITH CONTINUED POLITICIZATION. THE AUTHOR'S EXPERIENCE AS KANSAS CITY POLICE CHIEF IS STRESSED.
