The typical computer hacker is a white male between 15 and 34 years of age who began using the computer underground between the ages of 10 and 25 years; hacking tools and methods are readily available on the Internet and many require little technical expertise.
Abstract
Unlike earlier hackers who were motivated by technological reasons, breaking into computer systems now motivates many malicious hackers because it provides a sense of power and control. These hackers often boast of their exploits, and they leverage the knowledge accumulated by earlier hackers to break into various computer systems for malicious purposes. Because hackers are able to alter critical files and use application programs without authorization, companies have implemented various security measures, such as passwords, to restrict hacker access and protect system integrity. In general, the increased globalization of the economy, the integration of information technology into critical business processes, and corporate use of the Internet will significantly affect the motivation and behavior of hackers. Instead of breaking into computer systems for the thrill and status, hackers may use their skills for political and financial gain. Because economic espionage is an increasing reality for corporations, law enforcement officials will need to become more knowledgeable in the tools, techniques, and motivations of hackers. 8 references
