Annotation

As a result of a shootout in Florida five years ago, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reevaluated their tactics, weapons, and ammunition. As a result, the agency selected a new Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol as well as a newly developed .40 cartridge.

Abstract

The cartridge was designed to duplicate the performance of the mid-velocity 10-mm load chosen by the Agency. This article compares two of the handguns that have been recently developed to fire both 10-mm and .40 ammunition, one manufactured by Smith & Wesson and the other manufactured by Glock. The two .40 weapons, the Glock 23 compact model and the Smith & Wesson 4046, a 4-inch barrel, double action only model were analyzed in terms of their triggers, levers, and buttons; firepower; sights; grips; and reliability. The Smith & Wesson 1086 double action only and the Glock Model 20 10-mm pistols were compared in terms of their felt recoil, trigger control, and reliability.
