PROGRAM EVALUATION OF THE FIRST YEAR'S OPERATION OF A PILOT PROJECT TO IMPLEMENT A SCHOOL SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT PROGRAM AT THE ELEMENTARY AND JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL LEVELS.
Abstract
THIS PROJECT CALLED FOR A COMMUNITY-WIDE APPROACH TO RECTIFYING UNDESIRABLE (DELINQUENT) BEHAVIOR IN YOUTH AND PROPOSED TO INFLUENCE TARGET CHILDREN BOTH WITHIN THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT AND WITH PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT BY UTILIZING ADLERIAN COUNSELING TECHNIQUES. THE TYPES OF STUDENT BEHAVIOR MONITORED WERE TRUANCY, LOW ACHIEVEMENT, LACK OF INTEREST IN SCHOOL, AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR, LACK OF PARENTAL INTEREST, DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY, AND DISRESPECT FOR AUTHORITY. CERTIFIED COUNSELORS WORKED IN THREE EXPERIMENTAL SCHOOLS. THREE COMPLEMENTARY CONTROL SCHOOLS WERE ALSO CHOSEN. WITHIN EACH SCHOOL, A TARGET GROUP OF 30 STUDENTS WAS RANDOMLY SELECTED FROM AMONG FOURTH AND SEVENTH GRADERS. THE PROGRAM WAS EVALUATED ACCORDING TO THE RESULTS OF PRE-TEST AND POST-TEST SCORES OF STUDENT, TEACHER, AND PARENT SURVEYS MADE AT EXPERIMENTAL AND CONTROL SCHOOLS, TWO INTERIM EVALUATIONS AND INTERVIEWS WITH TEACHERS, STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPANTS. (COPIES OF THESE EVALUATION INSTRUMENTS ARE INCLUDED IN THE REPORT.) EVALUATION RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN STATISTICAL TABLES. EVALUATORS CONCLUDED THAT THE PROGRAM'S FIRST YEAR HAD BEEN SUCCESSFUL. SEVERAL RECOMMENDATIONS WERE MADE FOR THE SECOND YEAR OF OPERATION INCLUDING REPLACING THE EXPERIMENTAL-CONTROL DESIGN WITH A PROCESS-PRODUCT EVALUATION DESIGN. IT WAS ALSO SUGGESTED THAT ALL PROJECT STAFF MAINTAIN SCHEDULES AND KEEP RECORDS OF ALL PROJECT-RELATED ACTIVITIES.
