The study examined the effects of a 4-day, 10-hour-per-day work week (4/10 schedule) on state police activities and attitudes in 3 Illinois districts between February 1985 and April 1986.
Abstract
Data were gathered from a survey questionnaire, the Bureau of Personnel, Bureau of Logistics, selected Traffic Information Planning System for the test period and the corresponding period of the previous year, and from personal interviews with selected command personnel. Results indicate that 74 percent of officers were satisfied with the current schedule. A majority would recommend it to other districts, wished to continue the schedule, and experienced no more anxiety and little change in sleep or eating patterns under the new schedule. An increase in unobligated time suggested an increase in overall productivity. While there were some changes in the number of citations, warnings, and field reports, these were not significant. The 4/10 schedule had no effect on maintenance costs or sick time, and overtime either significantly decreased (in one district) or did not change significantly. 5 tables.
