A pretest-posttest research design was used to determine the effectiveness of a five-session program designed to prevent dating violence among 440 students in a majority-black middle school in Opa-Locka, Florida, a city in the Miami area.
Abstract
The study used a control group design and a composite measure to assess changes in knowledge, attitudes, and methods of dealing with relationship violence. Program participants as a group had significantly higher posttest scores than did the control group. They also scored significantly higher at posttest than at pretest. Scores within the program group also varied by sex and level (regular or advanced); male advanced students made the highest gains. Improvements occurred in knowledge about relationship violence and attitudes about nonphysical violence, but attitudes toward physical violence and methods of dealing with relationship violence did not change.
