THE MANGEMENT OF COLLEGE PROGRAMS IN PENNSYLVANIA PRISONS, THE QUALITY OF INSTRUCTION AND SERVICES OFFERED AND INMATES' ATTITUDES TOWARD THE PROGRAMS ARE EVALUATED.
Abstract
EVALUATION DATA WERE GATHERED BY QUESTIONNAIRES ADMINISTERED TO OFFENDERS AND TO DEANS OF CONTINUING EDUCATION AT EACH OF THE 14 COLLEGES PARTICIPATING IN PRISON COLLEGE PROGRAMS. FINDINGS ARE REPORTED RELATIVE TO THE PHILOSOPHY AND CONTENT OF THE COLLEGE PROGRAMS, ORIENTATION AND SUPERVISION OF INSTRUCTORS, AVAILABILITY OF SUPPORT SERVICES, RECORDKEEPING, STUDENT EVALUATIONS, AND OFFENDERS' PERCEPTIONS OF THEIR INSTRUCTORS AND OF EDUCATIONAL SERVICES AND FACILITIES. RECOMMENDATIONS FOCUS ON IMPROVING ORIENTATION FOR INSTRUCTORS, ESTABLISHING DEGREE PROGRAMS WITHIN THE INSTITUTIONS, DEFINING THE INSTRUCTOR'S ROLE IN DEALING WITH INMATE PROBLEMS NOT DIRECTLY RELATED TO LEARNING, UPGRADING SUPPORT SERVICES (LIBRARY MATERIALS, TUTORING, COUNSELING), STRENGTHENING RECORDKEEPING AND EVALUATION PRACTICES, AND IMPROVING THE UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN COLLEGES AND PRISONS ABOUT LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS. COPIES OF EVALUATION INSTRUMENTS AND OTHER SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION ARE APPENDED. SUPPORTING TABULAR DATA ARE INCLUDED. (LKM)
