Abstract
Uniforms can consist of jumpsuits, a functional uniform of shirts and pants, and outerwear. Material and color are two important considerations. The choice of tactical vest should be made by evaluating a department's specific needs. A purchaser should strive to attain the best possible protection without unduly restricting an officer's movement. When considering footwear for a SWAT team, one must balance protection, efficiency, and comfort. Helmets should be light, allow for good visibility, protect officers, and leave the seal of a gas mask intact. The first requirement of a balaclavas, or hood, is that it is to be made of fire-retardant Nomex. Gas masks are another essential component of SWAT equipment. Communication devices should be chosen for their clarity. Other items of equipment include gloves, equipment bags, lights, diversionary devices, shields, SWAT belts, and vans or trucks. Training and compensation are two other factors which cannot be ignored when creating an effective SWAT team.
