This new edition (third) of "Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring" presents six evidence-based standards for practice that incorporate the latest research and best-available practice principles.
Abstract
Part I presents six evidence-based standards that address critical components of mentoring program operations: recruitment; screening; training; matching; monitoring and support; and closure. For each standard, benchmarks are proposed, along with research-based justifications. Together, the standards and benchmarks provide practical guidance on how best to develop high-quality mentoring in daily operations. The standards and benchmarks apply whether in a stand-alone mentoring program or a positive youth development program in which mentoring is one component. In addition, enhancements based principally on the wisdom of outstanding practitioners are provided. Part II provides advice on how to build a new mentoring program or strengthen an existing one. The focus is on program design and planning; program management; and program evaluation. The section on program design and planning includes guidelines for launching an effective new mentoring program. The section on program management addresses procedures for ensuring that a mentoring program operates within a strong, organizational context, regardless of the setting. The section on program evaluation contains basic guidelines on how to prepare for and support this function.
